Hi Friends,

When people ask me where to begin with astrology, I usually start with the Big 3: Sun sign, Moon sign and Rising sign.

And out of the three, the most misunderstood is the Rising sign.

So what is the Rising Sign?

Also referred to as the Ascendant (AC), your Rising sign is the zodiac sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It governs the 1st house in your chart—the area of life associated with your identity, physical appearance, self-image and personality.

If the Sun shows your purpose and the Moon shows how you nurture yourself, then the Rising shows you and your way of being.

Because it is based on your exact time of birth, the Rising sign is deeply personal. For example, I’m a Capricorn sun and a Gemini rising. My life plotline has centered around Capricorn themes like climbing the corporate ladder and embracing the role of provider. But, my day-to-day personality, the way I express myself, teach and connect with others, is shaped by Gemini. I love to share information and make complex ideas easier to grasp.

Why it matters:

Your Rising sign speaks to the you of you—your character, intelligence, energy and even the way others perceive you.

The part most people miss is that to really understand the Rising, you also need to know:

• The ruler of your Rising Sign (and what that planet is doing in your chart). The planetary ruler steers your life.

• The house that ruler occupies.

Together, these placements offer a nuanced lens into your personality, appearance, expression and the story your life is trying to tell.
